Abraham Lincoln: Lawyer, Leader, Legend is one of many in an informational book series published by Dorling Kindersly. This book tells of the life of Abraham Lincoln from the day he was born until the day he died. It gives important details while also telling a story. Fontes does a great job at making Abraham Lincoln human and giving him personality, likes and dislikes. It tells of how he was raised in an uneducated home, the death of his mother and introduction of a stepmother, how he learned, what people thought of him, and so much more. The book provides photographs, illustrations, and maps. It includes captions and highlight boxes throughout the text. At the back of the book it includes a glossary and index.
AR BookFinder lists this book with a LG (K-3) interest level and a 5th grade reading level. I think this book may be too advanced for K and 1st. I believe it may begin to interest students in the 2nd grade and up. I also think that reading level is set a little high, but that may be based on the length of the book and not the word difficulty. It would definitely need to be read in chunks. I would read this to my students when learning about Presidents, Abraham Lincoln, or US History. This book is easily broken into sections which makes it easier to teach bits at a time. It could be used when introducing new vocabulary or different text features.
